Mechanism of Action

Ferric maltol (also known as Iron-III maltol) is an iron-containing compound that is commonly used as an iron supplement. It has a unique mechanism of action compared to other iron supplements, which primarily work by increasing the amount of iron in the body.

Ferric maltol works by increasing the bioavailability of iron. It does this by forming a complex with ferric iron (Fe3+), which helps to solubilize the iron and reduce its oxidation state. This makes it easier for the iron to be absorbed by the body. Additionally, the maltol moiety in ferric maltol is thought to have a chelating effect, which further enhances iron absorption.

Once inside the body, ferric maltol is converted to iron, which can then be used by the body to produce hemoglobin and other iron-containing compounds. This makes ferric maltol an effective iron supplement for individuals who suffer from iron-deficiency anemia, which is a condition caused by a lack of iron in the body.

Indication

Ferric maltol is indicated for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia, which is a condition characterized by a reduced amount of hemoglobin in the blood. This results in decreased oxygen-carrying capacity and can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and pale skin.

Ferric maltol is commonly used in individuals who are unable to meet their iron requirements through diet alone, such as pregnant women, athletes, and individuals with dietary restrictions. It is also used in individuals who have difficulty absorbing iron from other sources, such as those with gastrointestinal disorders.

In addition to its use in treating iron-deficiency anemia, ferric maltol has been studied for its potential use in treating other iron-related conditions, such as iron overload disorders and iron-deficiency in patients with chronic kidney disease.
